Audience & Institutions Essay:

"Audiences are not concerned with where media texts come from." To what extent do you agree with this? I n the film industry the majority of the Audiences are not concerned with where the media text comes from. But there are still a few that are, so this statement can vary in the film industry. The film industry consists of many different film companies, Disney, Paramount, Columbia, Warners Bros and Universal Pictures being the big Conglomerates of the film industry. These Conglomerates then acquire the smaller film companies who are then called the subsidiaries. These Conglomerates are the Oligopolies of the film industry, Oligopolies being ‘a small number of conglomerates that have the monopoly in the film industry’.  Disney, being one of these conglomerates, is a good example of a film company who has to aid to the wants of certain audiences because a particular audience was concerned with the media text of certain films. This audience being the Chinese communist governm...

Audience & Institutions Essay:

In relation to the media area you have studied, discuss the way that audience consumption had changed over time: Audience Consumption in the film industry has changed drastically over the years. This has been led mostly by the Big Five. The Big Five are the big Conglomerates of the film industry, they are the ‘parent’ companies who control the film media industry. These Conglomerates also have Subsidiaries, who are the smaller film companies that are acquired (bought) by the bigger conglomerates. The Big Five consists of Disney, Universal Pictures, Paramount, Warners Bros and Columbia. They are the Oligopolies of the film industry, meaning they have dominance and a monopoly in the film industry. Disney holds 80 - 85% of the Box office, adding to their dominance in the film industry.  Over the years the way in which films have been distributed have changed, which has also led to the drastic change in Audience Consumption. Shirky’s end of audience theory states that Audience b...

Greys Anatomy Essay

This short film from  Greys Anatomy Shows the core representational groups of Ethnicity and Gender/Equality. Ethnicity is seen through the different ethnicity of Women who are standing in the hallway supporting the Patient. Gender and Equality is then shown when the man standing at the door stops the other man. We almost think that he has been stopped because he is black, but then when we carry on watching we realise that only women are in that area at the moment and so there is obviously a reason why the men can not go in and only women are in there.  Sound helps us as an audience gain a better audience gain a better understanding of the story line shown throughout the short clip, this is seen through the Non-diegetic and Diegetic sound. When the clip starts we hear the diegetic sound of the hospital, as everyone is going about their day. This is abruptly stopped with dialogue when the two men talk to each other, here the man standing guardian the door is keeping watch and m...

Hotel Babylon Essay

Hotel Babylon shows the core representational groups of ethnicity and class/status. Ethnicity is seen through the way that there are immigrants working in the Hotel Babylon. Class and status is then shown through the way that the men look down on the ethnic people. We see this contrast between the people in the hotel who hold dominance over the immigrants. Stuart Hall's reception theory is seen in this clip as there is an encoded message in which the audience decodes. When this message is sent, the audience realises and see’s that these immigrants are more than just illegal citizens, but that they have come to the UK for a fresh start and want to become a part of the society of the UK. But the immigration officers are trying to take away this hope, hence why the audience is  touched and provoked with emotions that feel for the illegal citizens. Which then leads them to understand their story.  Through Mise- en scene the costumes of all the people link to the setting of a hotel...
