Representation Essay - Breaking Bad

The clip 'breaking bad' uses all Four of the technical terms. In the film Breaking Bad there is a contrast between 'young' and 'old' we see this as the two main Characters are introduced into the film. The first being an old middle aged man and the second being a young man maybe in his early twenties. When we are first introduced to the old middle aged man, he is seen wearing black layered clothing with glasses on. His looks are 'rough' shown through his facials, hair and wrinkly skin. From personal Observation you could possibly stereotype him as a man who could (past tense) have been in prison before.

This Character is introduced to us in a Hardware Store, and is seen getting two cans of paint, which when you look closely, it looks like a normal setting but there is still a sense of uneasiness about the plot, as the man himself looks like an intense and stern man. At first the clip starts off with the diegetic sound of the man walking and getting the paint, we can hear the radio of the store playing in the background and the clang of the handles of the paint's as the man picks them out of the shelf. Through Observation of the man we can see that he is a married man as he wears a ring on his left hand, this may mean that he is a 'family' man who has a family to look after and protect.

The camera movement from the beginning of the film starts off with a pan across, starting at the paints and then panning towards the movement of the man walking towards the paints. The shot is a mis-shot as it is not too close up but is not far enough to see the mans whole body. It then cuts to A side view of the man walking, it starts off at the bottom of them and while following him walk pans upward towards his face, the mans hair is a clean cut and is fully shaved adding to his 'rough' look about him. This Hairstyle could only mean that he has either had a rough past or that he just wanted it to be cut that way, linking to the mysteriousness about him.

In the film we notice that there is a lot of camera movement, we see this in the way in which the camera changes angle and side multiple times throughout the short film. The Camera uses tracking shots and close-ups to capture moments. Especially closing up on the mans face, giving us as an audience a clear view of the Mans facials. The first time we see any emotion in the mans face is when he double takes, and looks back again at the trolley that sit in the middle of one of the areas. This double take shows that something inside the trolley captured his attention, and that there is something in the trolley that he has some kind of emotion towards, which means that there is something either from his past that he has recognised and is weary about.

There is also symbolism shown in the extract, through the use of the colour red and blue. Both colours from things that were placed inside the trolley, red symbolising death linking to the fact that the younger guy was placing a bunch of matches into the trolley, matches creating fire which also links to the colour Red. The colour blue symbolising chemicals. So when you put two and two together Red symbolising death or fire and Blue symbolising Chemicals meaning that maybe what the man had in the trolly was not for good 'building' purposes but were for something else, something bigger.

This links to the way in which the way that the younger guy looked. His physical appearance almost disturbing to others, his eyes blood shot red linking to the symbolism of red, his hair a mess as he wears a beanie over the top, his t-shirt filled with confusing pictures and his pants hanging from bellow his bum line. When the Man finally talks, it is like he knows what the guy is trying to do and corrects and instructs him. While the man is talking the younger guy is looking around almost cautiously watching to see if anyone near by is listening or watching their encounter. The younger guy realises that the Man knows what he is talking about, this is evident when the man says "don't by everything at once" in an almost annoyed tone. As an audience we sit and watch, wondering why the Man gives his advice to the younger guy knowing that what he was doing may not be good.

There is also symbolism in the symbol that is placed on the front of the young guys beanie. The symbol being a skull.

Preliminary Task Two - Final Edit.

Here is my Final Edit. The After Effects that I have used in my film include the following: Our Production logo that is shown at the very beginning of the film, this is counted as one of my after effects as I took time to Update the logo from the original to what it is now. As you can see the difference when you watch my Preliminary Task One and then my Preliminary Task Two.  My Other After Effects used is the credits, when the names 'Niav Rice' & 'Pheobe Armitage', this after effect is called a slow fade animation on letters. An extra After Effect I added was a 'Glitch' On one of my actors, this one is not visible at first but you can definitely see the glitch, this Effect is used 0:25 seconds into the short film.
